Herder Institute in Riga as a science network in the European Science Network (HeInRi)

The educational center and scientific institution “Herder Institute in Riga” (HI) was a university whose history (1921-1939) and contribution to the genesis of modern science have an important place in the context of Latvia, Europe and the world. HeInRi is a project focusing on HI in the European Science Network.

Oswald Spengler’s winter in Riga

In 1924, invited by HI, philosopher, historian and author of “The Decline of the West”, Oswald Spengler (1880-1936) arrives in Riga. This visit had consequences not only in the HI study process: a discussion in Riga is evoked between Spengler and German Baltic politician and cultural worker Paul Schiemann (1876-1944), who was born in Jelgava. This discussion had echoes that went to the level of the German Government of that time. In the documents in HI archive there is evidence about Spengler’s visit and discussions during it. Spengler’s visit and discussions in Riga represent cultural politic situation in Latvia and Europe at that time. Additional context for the materials in the archive is given by Spengler’s correspondence with HI and Riga Herder Society collaborator Paul von Sokolowski, who was the chairman of Riga Herder Society for several years. One aspect of HeInRi project research is focused to these events and the documents that represents them. Oswald Spengler’s visit to Riga is historical and symbolical testimony about HI as well as about Europe’s political and intellectual atmosphere at that time, because of that his portrait is used in the website design of HeInRi project.
